The D'Alembert Progressive betting system:
This system is much safer than the martingale since you are adding and
subtracting only single betting units instead of doubling each time. This means
it's far less likely to hit the maximum limit or not be able to afford the next
bet.
Here's how it works:
- Start with an initial bet amount
- After a loss increase the bet amount by one unit
- After a win decrease the bet amount by one unit
- The series ends when you reach your initial bet amount again
Example:
Bet Amount |

$1 |

-1 |
$2 |

-3 |

Although the d’Alembert reduces the chances
of a complete wipe-out of your bankroll when compared to the Martingale,
the possibility is still there. A long sequence of consecutive losses will soon
put the system in a position where it becomes almost impossible to recover.
As always the house edge works on every spin, and so increasing your
bets will eventually increase your losses. An extra bonus with the D'Alembert
however is the fact that you usually don't have to wait until the end of the
series to show a profit. You can cut the series short and still show a profit.
In the example above, stopping after the fifth round would show a profit of 1
unit.
